DUS To Host 1st Airport Ski Jump

February 03, 2010

The world’s first airport ski jump will be housed in the pre-security check-in hall of Dusseldorf International (DUS) as part of the seventh annual TravelSuperMart from Feb. 6 to 7.

Former British Olympic ski jumper Eddie “the Eagle” Edwards is slated to open the event, which takes place one week before the start of the Winter Olympics in Vancouver.

Snowboarders and ski-freestylers will perform stunts and jumps of up to 30 feet on real snow on the 130-feet long slope in the departure area of the airport terminal. About 80,000 passengers and visitors are expected to see the performances.

There will also be other entertainment, including other sports demos, comedy and musical performances and related animal shows.  There will also be free guided tours of the airport, consisting of a 45-minute driving tour on and around the airport; Air Berlin also offers flight tours around the airport for €29. Performers include soul-chanteuse Cassandra Steen, artists from the "Buddy Holly Musical," and moderator and former swimming champion Christian Keller.

There is no charge for the event, which runs both days from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
